Tips and Tricks for visiting the world-renowned Red Rocks
I have now been to Red Rocks 3 times - twice for concerts and once during the day visiting the park and museum. And I have 2 concerts planned this Spring/ Summer! It is truly one of the most stunning venues I've ever been to. Located in Morrison, CO -- just a short drive from Denver -- this world-renowned concert venue is more than just a place to see live music; it's an experience that blends the natural world with the magic of music. It's no wonder why it's a must-visit destination for music lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Red Rocks is a True Natural Wonder
What the heck is Red Rocks?
Red Rocks is not your typical concert venue. It's an open-air amphitheater, nestled between two red sandstone rock formations, creating a beautiful backdrop for any performance. The amphitheater's acoustics are known for their exceptional quality, because of the rock formation.
Red Rocks: A Musical History
The venue opened in 1941. Over the years, Red Rocks has hosted some of the most iconic artists in the world, from The Beatles to U2 and many more. It officially became a city park in 1941, preserving its unique natural surroundings and cultural significance. If you want the full history, you can check out the official website:
Don't forget to also check the Event Calendar so you can visit yourself!
Red Rocks: More Than Just A Concert Venue
Visitors can enjoy a visitor center and museum, gift shop, and even dine at the Ship Rock Grille, offering stunning views of the amphitheater. (Check the website before you go because they have been closed for renovations in early 2024).
There are also shuttle services available for those who prefer not to make the steep hike up from the parking area.
In addition to its concerts, Red Rocks also hosts a Summer Film Series, Film on the Rocks, screening classic films under the stars. It's a unique way to experience the venue without the live music, but with all the magic.
For those seeking a more holistic experience, Red Rocks offers Yoga on the Rocks. Imagine practicing yoga at sunrise, surrounded by the natural beauty of the amphitheater and the gentle sounds of the wind in the rocks. I have yet to do this but it's on my Denver To-Do list! It starts at 7am on Saturdays during the summer so be prepared to get up early!
SnowShape - They also have a snow school workout series for those skiers and snowboarders. It takes place in September, right before the winter season. It's $17 for one day and $64 for the whole series. Check out the website for updated prices as this is what the cost was for 2023.
Red Rocks: Tips and Tricks from a Local
If you are not used to the already high Denver altitude, prepare yourself for Red Rocks. It sits at 6,450 feet above sea level! There are also 193 steps from the stage to the top of the pavilion! You will definitely get a workout just visiting this venue!
2. Dress in layers! A good rule of thumb for Colorado in general is to always have a variety of clothes. It could be warm and sunny one minute, and raining the next! See photo below here. This was October 2022 and it was freezing!
3. The amphitheater is a popular venue, so it's a good idea to purchase tickets well in advance.
4. Get there early to find good parking! All the parking is free, and there are multiple lots. The earlier you go, the better options of parking you'll have. Message me and I'll give you my secret to where to park! ;)
5. Uber/ Lyft/ Shuttles - If you plan on indulging in alcohol or other substances, please don't drive! There are shuttle services you can hire and also good 'ole Lyft and Uber is always a good option. Plus, they will drop and pick you up at the top so less walking.
6. Check out the venue when there isn't a concert - It's really cool to hike around the venue and check it out when there isn't a concert. And definitely check out the museum for a music history lesson!
From the second I first walked into Red Rocks, I understood why it's such a magical venue!
Red Rocks is officially open for the season! Go check it out!
