TVLexicon Returns: New Shows I'm excited for in 2023

In college, I studied Film and Digital Media (shoutout to UCSC Banana Slugs!) And since I have always loved TV, I started a TV blog called "TV Lexicon" which has now inspired this blog. I wanted to write about more than just TV, but I figured I'd share the shows I'm excited to watch in 2023.

(My old Blog logo my friend Glenn made in college)

Let me start by saying that I don't have the best taste in TV. Yes, I watch a lot of it, but I rarely watch the top shows on TV (i.e. Game of Thrones or The Last of Us) because I can't handle super violent/gory shows. My "niches" when it comes to TV tends to be in the trashy reality shows, true crime docs, or comedies. Or, I watch the same comfort shows that I've seen a million times, hello Friends, Boy Meets World, Psych, and The Office.

And in 2023, there are a few new shows that I'm very excited to watch, as well as some returning shows that I'm happy didn't get canceled.

New Seasons of Returning Shows:

How I Met Your Father: No, it's not as good as the original "How I Met Your Mother" but I'm still enjoying the cast and reliving the nostalgia of the original. Hilary Duff is the new lead and if you're a fellow millennial like myself, you will watch anything that she is a part of.

Cast: Hilary Duff, Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma

Network/Platform: Hulu

Release Date: 2nd season aired January 24, 2023

Party Down: The pink bow ties are back! If you haven't watched the original 2 seasons of this amazing show, run - don't walk - to Hulu and enjoy the amazing writing and hilarious acting. It follows a cater-waiter event company in Hollywood and hilarity ensues. There are also so many guest stars I could write a whole blog post about it. Yes, there are only 2 seasons of the original due to bad ratings, but it is a cult-favorite and one of my favorite shows of all time.

Cast: Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, Megan Mullally, Ken Marino and Ryan Hansen

Network/Platform: Starz

Release Date: February 24, 2023

Ted Lasso: It was just announced that Season 3 of the hit show about an American Football coach that moves to England to coach a Soccer team (the other football) will return.

Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh

Network/Platform: Apple TV

Release Date: March 2023

Brand New Shows of 2023

Daisy Jones and the Six: Based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, it follows a band from the 70s very similar to Fleetwood Mac as they explore the rise and fall of fame and relationships in and out of the band. The book is amazing and I am so excited to see it brought to life. I'd recommend reading the book first.

Cast: Riley Keough, Camila Marrone, Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse

Network/Platform: Amazon Prime Video

Release Date: March 3, 2023

Not Dead Yet: I knew nothing of this show before I starting watching, besides the fact that I liked the cast. It follows Gina's character, Nell, as she goes back to her old newspaper job but gets demoted and has to write obituaries. And while writing these obituaries she gets advice from the person she is writing about - in ghost form. The premise sounds a little weird - I know - but trust me, it's a good and actually funny watch. It airs on ABC and Hulu.

Cast: : Lauren Ash from Superstore, Gina Rodriguez from Jane the Virgin, and Hannah Simone from New Girl

Network/Platform: ABC/ Hulu

Release Date: February 2023

Lockwood & Co: Based on the book series of the same name, it follows a group of young ghost hunters in London. Sean and I watched the whole series in a weekend and we really enjoyed it! If you like the supernatural or a fan of Harry Potter, I recommend it!

Cast: Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman, Ali Hadji-Heshmati

Network/Platform: Netflix

Release Date: January 2023

Trashy reality shows I'm watching

You can stop reading now if you aren't a fan of the genre. I love a good trashy reality show, especially if it features hot people frolicking on a tropical beach somewhere.

Vanderpump Rules (Bravo)

In their 10th (!) season, the SUR-vers are back for more drama as many of them navigate single life again. I've watched this show from the beginning and I will continue watching until it's canceled, which might never happen as long as Lisa Vanderpump (Real Housewives) is involved.

Perfect Match (Netflix)

Netflix is a genius! They have had many reality dating shows over the years and now have brought their contestants together from their other shows and put them all in a house in Panama to hook up, ahem, find their "perfect match". It's basically the love child of Bachelor in Paradise and Are You the One because they have to couple up in order to stay in the house. Oh ya, and Nick Lachey from boy band 98 degrees is the host.

Are You the One (Paramount +)

Speaking of AYTO, there is a new season out now. This is their 9th season but this time, it's international! On this show, a group of men and women compete in challenges and try to find out who their match is, based on an algorithm. If they all successfully find their match, the group wins a million dollars to share.

Love is Blind (Netflix)

Have you ever thought about dating someone through a wall? And then propose to them without seeing them still? Yes, this is the concept of Love is Blind and I love every second of it. The show follows 5 couples as they date and get engaged, sight-unseen, and then decide at the altar if they actually want to get married. It's TV gold. You can binge-watch all seasons now.

The Bachelor (ABC/Hulu)

After 27 seasons, I feel like I just watch because I have to and because I've pretty much seen every season. Every season is pretty much the same yet I haven't been able to quit it. There's a generically attractive looking male lead and 30 hot, young women competing for his "final rose" and engagement.

I'm sure I missed a show or two, so let me know which shows you're excited for or have been loving so far this year!
